What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is an artificial “tooth” placed over a damaged or worn natural tooth. They are ideal for patients who have significant damage to a tooth but not to the point of requiring extraction. A crown visibly restores a tooth’s appearance. At the same time, it provides lasting functional benefits (namely for chewing and speaking).

Crowns are made from high-quality, medical-grade materials that allow patients to resume normal dietary habits. The most common material our crowns are made from is porcelain, with each crown custom-made in our partnered lab.

Why Porcelain?

Most patients choose porcelain crowns due to the combined benefits of appearance and durability. Porcelain is sturdy, allowing patients to have minimal dietary restrictions. It can also be color-matched to blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Dental Crowns FAQs

What is the process like?
  • Consultation + Exam: First, we meet with each patient to evaluate their case. In some cases, multiple options may be available. We discuss these with each patient and form a plan based on their needs, goals, and budget.
  • Preparing the Tooth: This may be as simple as smoothing away uneven parts of the tooth. Or, it may involve having a root canal. We make sure that no decay or bacteria remain on the tooth before proceeding.
  • Taking Impressions: We then take impressions of your teeth so the crown will fit your bite and look natural. Our partnered dental technicians custom-make each crown for our patients one at a time.
  • Placing the Crown: At your final visit, we place the crown over the tooth and put it in its permanent position. We may make minor adjustments to ensure a smooth, comfortable fit that looks natural.

Dental crowns are best for patients with more significant damage to their teeth, whether from decay or other causes. One of the most common reasons is that patients need a crown following a root canal. Capping a treated tooth with a crown enhances its stability while also restoring its appearance.

We work closely with each patient to evaluate their case individually. We take the time to ensure a crown is your ideal solution because the treatment does require commitment to long-term results. Fortunately, those results are all positive! Even if crowns are not for you, we offer a suite of restorative treatments to bring your smile back to looking its best.

  • Dental Bonding: Bonding can restore teeth with minor damage. You can have the treatment quickly, but the results do not last as long as a crown.
  • Inlays or Onlays: These treatments can enhance a tooth’s structural integrity. However, they are best for moderate tooth decay.
  • Dental Veneers: Veneers can enhance the appearance of your front teeth when they have mild damage.

Most patients will have their dental crowns last 5 to 15 years. The main factor in your crown’s longevity will be your at-home oral health habits. Patients who brush and floss daily will typically get more out of their crowns.

Additionally, routine dental care will prove essential. For example, a patient with untreated gum disease may notice more wear on a treated tooth. Start with two visits a year and adjust as recommended by your dentist.

Many insurance plans will reimburse patients for dental crowns. However, the amount covered will vary based on your coverage. We recommend calling your insurance provider to learn about your plan and what your costs will be.

Additionally, we offer our patients TruGlog Membership plans with discounts on all our procedures. Call our office, and a staff member will help you choose a membership plan that matches your oral health needs.
