In a perfect world, everyone would be able to keep all their teeth, smiling a full, healthy smile. However, sometimes removing a tooth might be the best solution to keep a patient healthy or give their smile a second chance. Dr. Rhonda Kalasho offers tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal for patients who need the procedure to maintain overall well-being. Each procedure is performed with care and precision to ensure a pain-free experience for each patient.

Tooth Extractions: Why Would You Need Them?
Tooth Extraction
Whenever possible, we aim to restore a patient’s tooth rather than remove it. However, pulling a tooth might be the only path forward in cases of severe decay, damage, or dental injury. Removing the tooth allows your smile a second chance by eliminating a problem that would only continue to worsen. While this option is a last resort, it is sometimes optimal for restoring a healthy oral environment.
Benefits of Tooth Extraction
- Procedure can often be completed in minutes
- Give your smile a second chance
- Prevent infection from decay or damage
- Relief from symptoms
- Quick recovery (often only a couple of days)
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Millions of wisdom teeth are removed across the US each year. While the occasional person might have no issues with their wisdom teeth, most patients will not have enough room in their mouths for this final set of molars. Without enough room to grow in, the teeth can become impacted or grow at poor angles, leading to risk for infection, tooth misalignment, and even jawbone issues. Wisdom teeth removal allows patients to remove these teeth even before they can begin causing problems and symptoms.
Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal
- Quickly address dental health concerns
- Pain-free procedure
- Minimal time for recovery
- Prevent future dental problems
- Experience rapid symptom relief
Having a Tooth Extraction: Overview of the Process
Tooth extraction might sound intimidating, but a skilled specialist can complete the entire process without you experiencing any pain. Simple extractions generally only require local anesthetic. You might feel some pressure or pulling, but the numbing solution eliminates any pain. For more complex procedures (for wisdom teeth or molars, for example) patients may elect for strong sedation, such as general anesthesia. A broken canine tooth might be simpler to remove, while an impacted wisdom tooth is an example of something more complex.
Depending on the complexity, you can expect a visit of about 15 to 60 minutes, though this can still vary somewhat. Afterward, you can resume normal activities within a couple of hours for a simple extraction. For complex ones, patients should spend a few days resting at home.

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Determining if you need a tooth extraction involves a careful evaluative process. We want to be absolutely certain there are no alternatives. For a tooth that is damaged or decayed, can conduct an exam and take X-rays to look at the whole picture. In many cases, we can restore the tooth with treatments like onlays or crowns. However, severe damage or decay may require an extraction.
Wisdom tooth extraction is slightly different, since you may need to remove the teeth before they become a problem. For teens, a dentist can track your health as you grow and provide an evaluation if these teeth will pose a later problem. For adults, you may begin to experience symptoms such as crowding, pain, inflammation, and more. If you notice any of these, we recommend coming in for an exam.
How Long Does the Recovery Take?
Despite being oral surgery, tooth extractions come with minimal recovery required. The mouth can heal quite rapidly, healing any incisions within a matter of days, generally without any issues. Simple extractions are easiest, with a couple of days of soreness or discomfort after surgery. Though these can be readily managed with OTC pain medication, we still will provide some vital aftercare instructions. For example, you will likely need to avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Once your recovery is complete, you can then move to the stage of replacing your tooth!
Recovering from wisdom teeth removal usually takes longer than simple extractions due to the complexity of the procedure. Patients can expect to take about 3 to 5 days off from work or school after the procedure. Noticeable swelling is entirely normal, so do not be alarmed if you have “chipmunk” cheeks for a few days. Fortunately, this quickly resolves and you can be back to your full health within about 1 to 2 weeks.
Does Insurance Cover a Tooth Extraction?
Wisdom teeth removal is usually covered by insurance, depending on the plan. We happily work with patients to help them understand their insurance situation and what the expected costs may be for their procedure. Similarly, tooth extraction can be covered by insurance, but the amount can vary.
